Scrapbooks, commemorative newspapers, and news clippings compiled and gathered by Charline Brandt on the following topics: Cardinal Joseph Bernardin; other figures associted with the Catholic Church, and other events and people in South Carolina. Collection includes materials re the World War II fighter pilots known as Doolittle Raiders, including reunions held in Columbia, S.C., with photographs from the 2002 gathering; University of South Carolina (alumni publications, 1950s-2002, including Little Red Book of Gamecock Football-1956 Alumni News and USC Perspective-June 1962, re presidency of Robert L. Sumwalt; biograhpical information on student athletes, faculty and others); and reaction in Columbia, SC, to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Apr. 1968; a biographical file on Strom Thurmond (1902-2003); [all in Box 1] News items related to the Catholic Church include a file re Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her visits to Charleston, S.C. (June 1982), and to Charlotte, N.C. (1995); the installation of Bishop Robert E. Guglielmone as 13th bishop, Diocese of Charleston (Box 1); and Pope John Paul II, including visit to Columbia, SC, 1987, text of program, 11 Sept. 1987, from his appearance at Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, S.C., which included music and liturgy and many local musicians, clergymen, and laymen, titled, "Public Service of Christian Witness - His Holiness, Pope John Paul II" (45 sheets); and death, 2005 (Box 2). Scrapbook, 1952-2008, re the life, ministry, and career of Joseph Bernardin, consisting of newspaper clippings, photographs, commemorative programs, etc. Bernardin was a priest in the Roman Catholic Church, and as a youth in Columbia, S.C., had served as newspaper delivery boy for the Brandt family. He served as Archbishop of Chicago from 1982 until his death, and was appointed Cardinal in 1983. News items discuss Bernardin's visits to Columbia and the lecture series inagurated in 1999 and offered annually by the USC department of Religious Studies at University of South Carolina.
